I am writing and developing the exhibits for the Historic Halifax State Historic Site’s new visitors center with Design Dimension, Inc. and North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources staff. The exhibits will tell the story of Halifax, North Carolina from its inhabitance by American Indians through the 20th century with an emphasis on the town’s key roles in colonial North Carolina’s economy and politics, American Independence, and the Revolutionary War. Halifax was the site of the Halifax Resolves, the first official action by an American colony to call for independence from Great Britain. This document led to the Declaration of Independence. The exhibits will also explore themes of liberty and how it has been unfairly applied throughout history, as well as key geographical aspects of Halifax that impacted its history, and how the site has been preserved.
