I completed a collections inventory project for the Oliver Nestus Freeman Round House and African American Museum in which I listed all of the museum’s artifacts, both on display and in storage, the museum’s resource library collection, and the museum’s equipment and furnishings in order to have an accurate, up-to-date record of the museum’s contents and property. The process included the creation of a spreadsheet document which assigned numbers to items predominantly at the item level; however, some items were inventoried at the folder or collection level to accommodate time and budget preferences. A spreadsheet was chosen over collection software for ease of access and use by current staff and volunteers. The spreadsheet also describes items and lists their location. The inventory process also included photographing items for reference.
